{"id":27437,"date":"2018-10-23T14:07:06","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T08:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27437"},"modified":"2018-10-23T14:07:06","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T08:37:06","slug":"more-river-stretches-are-now-critically-polluted-cpcb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/more-river-stretches-are-now-critically-polluted-cpcb\/","title":{"rendered":"More river stretches are now critically polluted: CPCB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/more-river-stretches-critically-polluted-cpcb\/article24963681.ece\">More river stretches are now critically polluted: CPCB<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0According to an assessment by the CPCB, the number of polluted stretches in India\u2019s rivers have increased.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important facts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)<\/strong> is a statutory organization established in 1974 under the Ministry of Environment and Forest.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>National Green Tribunal (NGT)<\/strong> has been established in 2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, conservation of forest etc.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)<\/strong> is the amount of dissolved oxygen used by microorganisms in the biological process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The greater the BOD, the lower is the amount of dissolved oxygen available for marine animals.<\/li>\n<li>It is a reliable gauge to measure organic pollution in water bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>CPCB has a programme of measuring the quality of rivers based on BOD <strong>since 1990s<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The health of a river and efficiency of the water treatment are classified based on BOD.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The greater the BOD the higher is the priority level.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BOD greater than or equal to 30 mg\/l is categorized as <strong>Priority 1.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>BOD between 3.1- 6 mg\/l is termed as <strong>Priority 5.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\u00a0The CPCB considers a <strong>BOD less than 3 mg\/l<\/strong> an indicator of a healthy water body.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) conducted an assessment of the pollution in Indian rivers based on the recommendations of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The report has not been published yet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Findings of the Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>The number of polluted stretches in India\u2019s rivers have <strong>increased to 351 from 302 in 2015<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The number of <strong>critically polluted stretches<\/strong> where water quality indicators are the poorest has also <strong>gone up to 45 from 34.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Although the focus is mainly on Ganga and the states through which it flows, it has been found that many rivers in <strong>Maharashtra, Assam and Gujarat<\/strong> are far more polluted.<\/li>\n<li>These three states account for <strong>117 of the 351<\/strong> polluted river stretches.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Some of significant stretches of pollution includes the<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mithi river<\/strong> between Powai and Dharavi, BOD level of 250 mg\/l<\/li>\n<li><strong>Godavari<\/strong> from Someshwar to Rahed, BOD level of 5.0-80 mg\/l<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sabarmati<\/strong> between Kheroj to Vautha, BOD level of 4.0-147 mg\/l<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Hindon<\/strong> between Saharanpur to Ghaziabad, BOD level of 48-120 mg\/l<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"15\">\n<li>In contrast, the pollution level of Ganga in stretches of Uttar Pradesh has BOD range of 3.5-8.8 mg\/l and is categorized as a <strong>Priority 4<\/strong> river.<\/li>\n<li>The increase in numbers reflects higher pollution level as well as an increase in water quality monitoring stations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More river stretches are now critically polluted: CPCB News \u00a0According to an assessment by the CPCB, the number of polluted stretches in India\u2019s rivers have increased.
