Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

India has achieved its two initial <\/span>Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Targets well ahead of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) NDC or Nationally Determined Contribution is <\/span>a climate action plan to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Each Party to the Paris Agreement is required to provide its NDC and update it every five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which are the two initial NDC Targets achieved by India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

India had submitted its first NDCs in the year 2015 comprising following two targets:<\/span><\/p>\n

1) To reduce the emissions’ intensity<\/strong> of its GDP by 33 to 35 percent by 2030 from 2005 level.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) To achieve about 40 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy<\/strong> resources by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

These two targets have been achieved well ahead of the time. By October 2023, Non-fossil fuel power capacity has reached 43.81%.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the updated NDC Targets?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In August 2022, India updated its NDC according to which target is to:<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0 Reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 45% by 2030, compared to the 2005 level.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) To meet 50% of cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n
