For instance, recently India sent off its first winter expedition of scientists to the Himadri Research Station in the Arctic, which will now remain operational throughout the year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) <\/span>India\u2019s Arctic Policy <\/span><\/b>was released in <\/span>2022: <\/span><\/b>It <\/span>is built on six central pillars: Science and research, Environmental protection, Economic and human development, Transportation and connectivity, Governance and international cooperation, and National capacity building.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) <\/span>Arctic Council: <\/span><\/b>India holds one of the 13 positions as the <\/span>Observer<\/span><\/b> in the Arctic Council (a forum of countries that decides on managing the region\u2019s resources and popular livelihood).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) In 2008, India opened a research base <\/span>Himadri<\/span><\/b> in Svalbard, Norway. It is India’s first permanent Arctic research station.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) India also has one underwater Arctic observation station, set up in 2015, called <\/span>IndARC<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) India’s <\/span>first expedition to Antarctica<\/span><\/b> was in 1981.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) In 1983, India signed the <\/span>Antarctic Treaty<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

3) India built its first research base, <\/span>Dakshin Gangotri<\/span><\/b>, in 1983-84. It was excavated in 1989 and now operates as a supply base and transit camp.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) The <\/span>Maitri Base<\/span><\/b> superseded Dakshin Gangotri in 1989. It is located atop the Schirmacher Oasis. India is rebuilding it to make it bigger and last for at least 30 more years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5) <\/span>Bharati Base <\/span><\/b>was established in 2012, located next to Larsmann Hill. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6) <\/span>Sagar Nidhi:<\/span><\/b> In 2008, India commissioned the Sagar Nidhi ice-class vessel for research. It can cut through thin ice and is the first Indian vessel to navigate Antarctic waters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
