Noma eats away facial tissue and bones if not treated early.<\/p>\n<p>2) It is caused by the <strong>bacteria <b><span tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tooltip\"><span class=\"c5aZPb\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-enable-toggle-animation=\"true\" data-extra-container-classes=\"ZLo7Eb\" data-hover-hide-delay=\"1000\" data-hover-open-delay=\"500\" data-send-open-event=\"true\" data-theme=\"0\" data-width=\"250\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwi8vdbQ9J2DAxUlYvUHHbliCZYQmpgGegQIERAI\"><span class=\"JPfdse\" data-bubble-link=\"\" data-segment-text=\"spirochete\">spirochete<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b> Borrelia vincenti<\/strong>, commonly found in the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>3) It typically begins as inflammation of gums but progresses rapidly, leading to extensive tissue destruction and eventually exposing facial bones.<\/p>\n<p>4) It is also called cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis.<\/p>\n<p>5) It has a <strong>mortality rate of around 90%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>6) It primarily<strong> affects children aged 2 to 6 years old <\/strong>who are malnourished, infected with infectious diseases, living in extreme poverty with poor oral health, or who have weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>7)<strong> Treatment-<\/strong> Immediate action with antibiotics, rehydration, correcting electrolyte imbalances, and providing nutritional supplements can halt the disease&#8217;s progression.<\/p>\n<p>8)<strong> Preventive measures-<\/strong> Enhancing living conditions and healthcare access for vulnerable populations, ensuring proper nutrition, immunization, oral hygiene, and sanitation practices.<\/p>\n<p>9) The illness\u2019s neglected nature is most likely due to the fact that it affects the world\u2019s most marginalised children.<\/p>\n<h2>What are Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD)?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/jan-30-declared-world-neglected-tropical-diseases-day-by-wha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click Here to read<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus &#8211; Science &amp; Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source- This post is based on the article &#8220;Noma added to WHO&#8217;s list of Neglected Tropical Disease &#8221; published in &#8220;DownToEarth&#8221; on 18th December 2023.
