{"id":27520,"date":"2018-10-23T14:32:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T09:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27520"},"modified":"2018-10-23T14:32:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T09:02:54","slug":"combining-cooperation-with-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/combining-cooperation-with-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining cooperation with competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/opinion\/combining-cooperation-with-competition\/article24927953.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining cooperation with competition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><b>News <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.A two day informal summit between Indian Prime Minister and Chinese President took place in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in April 2018, has to be seen in the wider development in the backdrop of Indo-Pacific region<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Important facts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.India and China are able to manage their differences as both of them need to concentrate on their economic development.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.New Delhi would do well in areas of same ideas, while not compromising on its border security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Issues Between India and China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>a)One Belt One Road (OBOR) <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has not joined the China led OBOR initiative or the Belt and Road initiative (BRI), due to its own concerns about violation of its sovereignty via<\/span><\/li>\n<li>CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor) in J &amp; K.<br \/>\nIndia firmly believes that connectivity initiative must be based on universally recognised international norms, good governance,rule of law, openness, transparency, and equity.<\/li>\n<li>The development must be in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>b) .Doklam issue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China had started construction of Road in Doklam region of Bhutan (territory claimed by China) to which India had objected, leading to tensions between them..<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both countries pulled back their troops before Indian PM travelled to China for BRICS Summit in September 2017.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doklam crisis resolved but Chinese troops are still patrolling on the Sino-Indian border as China tests both Indian defence and its resolve.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>c) Indian Ocean Region (IOR)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is worried about China\u2019s so-called \u201c<\/span><b>String of Pearls\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strategy under which it has already helped in constructing port and port facilities at Gwadar in Pakistan, Hambantota in Sri Lanka, and Chittagong in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting up of Chinese base in Djibouti has further aggravated the Indian concerns in IOR<\/span><b>.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(d) <\/span><b>Trade between India and China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India comes under a huge trade deficit with China. \u2022In 2017 total trade between India and China reached to a historic high of $84.44 billion, and increased Up to $51.75billion in China favour.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Outcome of Wuhan summit<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategic guidance issued to respective militaries to strengthen communication and effectiveness in management of border affairs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China also announced that, it \u00a0would decrease tariffs on 28 medicines including cancer drugs from India, however this \u00a0will take time in implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>(e) Other concerns<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is also increasing its \u00a0presence in Gulf region and in Africa. The Gulf region is home to a huge Indian Diaspora and India has always had upper hand in this region.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India had also shown its displeasure on growing chinese presence in IOR at the Shangri-La Dialogue, 2018 in Singapore.<\/li>\n<li>India has also advocated for \u00a0equal access as a right under International Law to all countries in South China Sea, where various countries are in direct contention with China over territorial issues.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, China\u2019s \u2018all weather friendship\u2019 with Pakistan is worrisome for India, especially as it has been alleged to supply nuclear weapons and missiles to Pakistan.<\/li>\n<li>China has also repeatedly blocked India\u2019s bid for <strong>membership to NSG.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>4. Steps taken by India<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India has resumed Quadrilateral initiative (Military exercise of India, Australia, Japan, US), which was cancelled in 2007, because of China\u2019s protests against it.<\/li>\n<li>The setting up of a tri-services command by India in the A &amp; N Islands gives it an unmatched reach in the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>5.
