Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Himachal Pradesh state government is reviewing eco-sensitive zone boundaries around Pong Dam to address challenges for locals and support agriculture activities during low water levels.<\/p>\n

What are Eco Sensitive Zones?<\/h2>\n

1) Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ) or Ecologically Fragile Areas (EFAs) are areas in India notified by the Ministry of Environment<\/strong>\u00a0around protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.<\/p>\n

2) The objective of declaring an area as ESZ is to create some kind of \u201cshock absorbers<\/strong>\u201d to the protected areas by regulating and managing the activities around such areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary?<\/h2>\n

Location<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It is located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>.
\n2) It is also known as Pong Dam Reservoir or Pong Dam Lake.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Created in\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\nThe dam was created in 1975 and was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1983.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Ramsar site<\/strong><\/td>\nThe lake was declared as a Ramsar Site in 2002.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Rivers<\/strong><\/td>\n1) The lake is fed by the Beas River<\/strong>.
\n2) Its numerous perennial tributaries are Gaj, Neogal, Binwa, Uhl, Bangana, and Baner.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Vegetation<\/strong><\/td>\nThe sanctuary area is covered with tropical and subtropical forests.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Flora<\/strong><\/td>\nAcacia, Jamun, Shisham, Mango, Mulberry, Ficus Kachnar, Amla, and Prunus.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fauna<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It includes animals like Sambhar, Barking Deer, Wild Bear, Nilgai, Clawless Otter, and Leopards.
\n2) The lake’s flagship species is the Bar Headed Geese, with other prominent species including Eurasian Coot, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Great Cormorant, GreyLag Goose, and more.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Note-<\/strong> There is a Vulture C<\/strong>af\u00e9<\/b>\u00a0in Pong wherein cattle carcass is dumped for Vultures.<\/p>\n
