{"id":27543,"date":"2018-10-23T14:41:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T09:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27543"},"modified":"2018-10-23T14:41:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T09:11:01","slug":"back-to-pisa-after-2009-poor-show-how-does-it-assess-15-year-olds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/back-to-pisa-after-2009-poor-show-how-does-it-assess-15-year-olds\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to PISA after 2009 poor show: how does it assess 15-year-olds?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/back-to-pisa-after-2009-poor-show-how-does-it-assess-15-year-olds-5349458\/\">Back to PISA after 2009 poor show: how does it assess 15-year-olds?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ministry of Human Resource Development (MoHRD) has decided to participate in Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), after 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> About PISA<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a triennial international survey, first administered in 2000 and coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).<\/li>\n<li>It assesses the quality of education systems across the world by evaluating students in science, mathematics and reading.<\/li>\n<li>PISA is a competency-based test designed which\u00a0assess candidate\u2019s ability to apply their knowledge to real-life situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Eligibility criteria to participate in PISA:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It focuses on 15-year-old students who have either completed or at near the end of their compulsory education.<\/li>\n<li>PISA requires the examinees to have finished at least six years of formal schooling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Significance of PISA<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>PISA has been significant to influence educational practices in many countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Unlike testing a student\u2019s memory and curriculum-based knowledge, emphasises on individual\u2019s capacity to solve real-life situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Criticism of PISA:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Academicians have expressed concerns over the impact of such rankings upon students.<\/li>\n<li>It is based on standardised testing which relies heavily on quantitative measures.<\/li>\n<li>It does not focus upon long-term and enduring solutions but only immediate solutions.<\/li>\n<li>Low or no participation of SAARC nations, Greenland, Argentina and the entire African continent, except Algeria and Tunisia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong> OECD\u2019s response:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>OECD stated that there is no evidence to suggest PISA or any other educational comparison has caused a shift to short-term fixes.<\/li>\n<li>In fact, according to OECD, it has created opportunities for policy-makers and stakeholders to collaborate across borders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong> India back to PISA:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>India has participated only once in PISA in 2009, with participation of 16,000 students from 400 schools.<\/li>\n<li>India was placed 72nd among the 74 participating countries. The government blamed \u201cout of context\u201d questions for the poor show.<\/li>\n<li>It was then decided to boycott the 2012 and 2015 cycles of PISA.<\/li>\n<li>HRD Ministry in 2016 set up a committee to review the matter which recommended that the country participate in the 2018 test cycle.<\/li>\n<li>MoHRD formally approved the decision to participate in the 2021 cycle of PISA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back to PISA after 2009 poor show: how does it assess 15-year-olds?
