January 3, 2024,<\/strong> marks the 193rd birth anniversary<\/strong> of Savitribai Phule.<\/p>\n

Who is Savitribai Phule?<\/h2>\n

Savitribai Phule<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

1) Savitribai Phule, a Dalit woman<\/strong> from the Mali community, was born on January 3, 1831, in the village of Naigaon in Maharashtra. <\/strong><\/p>\n

2) She was married to Jyotirao Phule (a social reformer) <\/strong>at a young age and he provided her education at home.<\/p>\n

What are the Contributions of Savitribai Phule?<\/h2>\n

I. Education:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) Savitribai, alongwith her husband Jyotirao Phule, pioneered India’s earliest girls’ school\u00a0 in Bhidewada, Pune, in 1848,<\/strong> shattering patriarchal barriers.<\/p>\n

2) She became India’s first woman teacher<\/strong> and first Indian headmistress.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

3) The couple opened more such schools for girls, Shudras, and Ati-Shudras (the backward castes and Dalits, respectively)<\/strong> in Pune.<\/p>\n

4) Pune University bears the name of Savitribai Phule,<\/strong> serving as a tribute to this formidable woman who passionately advocated for women’s education in India.<\/p>\n

II. Social Reform and Activism:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) Along with Jyotirao, Savitribai started the Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha<\/strong> (\u2018Home for the Prevention of Infanticide\u2019) as a care centre\u00a0for children who were\u00a0victims of rape, sati and those who escaped female infanticide.<\/p>\n

2) Savitribai Phule also advocated inter-caste marriages, widow remarriage, and eradication of child marriage, sati and dowry systems,<\/strong> among other social issues.<\/p>\n

3) In 1873<\/strong>, the Phules established the Satyashodhak Samaj,<\/strong> which translates to the ‘Truth-seekers’ Society.’<\/strong> This platform welcomed individuals regardless of their caste, religion, or class hierarchies, with the primary goal of promoting social equity.<\/p>\n

4) They also introduced the ‘Satyashodhak Marriage,’<\/strong> which rejected Brahmanical rituals.<\/strong> In this ceremony, the marrying couple pledged to advocate for education and equality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5) Savitribai became involved in relief work during the 1896 famine in Maharashtra<\/strong> and the 1897 Bubonic plague.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

III. Literary work:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) Savitribai Phule published her first collection of poems, called Kavya Phule (\u2018Poetry\u2019s Blossoms\u2019) <\/strong>in 1854.<\/p>\n

2) She also wrote the famous poem ‘Go Get Education’<\/strong> to encourage the oppressed and backward classes to obtain an education.<\/p>\n

Savitribai Phule’s life concluded on March 10, 1897,<\/strong> as she succumbed to an illness while endeavoring to protect a sick 10-year-old boy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
