{"id":275991,"date":"2024-01-03T17:54:40","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T12:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=275991"},"modified":"2024-01-03T17:54:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-03T12:24:40","slug":"savitribai-phule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/savitribai-phule\/","title":{"rendered":"Savitribai Phule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post has been created based on the article\u00a0<strong>\u201cSavitribai Phule Jayanti 2024: Celebrating India&#8217;s first woman teacher \u201d<\/strong>published in<strong>\u00a0\u201cBusiness Standard\u201d<\/strong> on 3rd January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in news?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>January 3, 2024,<\/strong> marks the <strong>193rd birth anniversary<\/strong> of Savitribai Phule.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is Savitribai Phule?<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.firstpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/3savitri.jpg?resize=405%2C230&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Savitribai Phule<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>1) Savitribai Phule, a <strong>Dalit woman<\/strong> from the Mali community, was born on January 3, 1831, in the village of <strong>Naigaon in Maharashtra. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2) She was <strong>married to Jyotirao Phule (a social reformer) <\/strong>at a young age and he provided her education at home.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the Contributions of Savitribai Phule?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I. Education:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) Savitribai, alongwith her husband Jyotirao Phule, pioneered <strong>India&#8217;s earliest girls&#8217; school\u00a0 in Bhidewada, Pune, in 1848,<\/strong> shattering patriarchal barriers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) She became <strong>India&#8217;s first woman teacher<\/strong> and <strong>first Indian headmistress.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3) The couple opened more such schools for <strong>girls, Shudras, and Ati-Shudras (the backward castes and Dalits, respectively)<\/strong> in Pune.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>Pune University bears the name of Savitribai Phule,<\/strong> serving as a tribute to this formidable woman who passionately advocated for women&#8217;s education in India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. Social Reform and Activism:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) Along with Jyotirao, Savitribai started the<strong> Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha<\/strong> (\u2018Home for the Prevention of Infanticide\u2019) as a care centre\u00a0for children who were\u00a0victims of rape, sati and those who escaped female infanticide.<\/p>\n<p>2) Savitribai Phule also <strong>advocated inter-caste marriages, widow remarriage, and eradication of child marriage, sati and dowry systems,<\/strong> among other social issues.<\/p>\n<p>3) In <strong>1873<\/strong>, the Phules established the <strong>Satyashodhak Samaj,<\/strong> which translates to the <strong>&#8216;Truth-seekers&#8217; Society.&#8217;<\/strong> This platform welcomed individuals regardless of their caste, religion, or class hierarchies, with the primary goal of promoting social equity.<\/p>\n<p>4) They also introduced the <strong>&#8216;Satyashodhak Marriage,&#8217;<\/strong> which<strong> rejected Brahmanical rituals.<\/strong> In this ceremony, the marrying couple pledged to <strong>advocate for education and equality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5) Savitribai became involved in <strong>relief work during the 1896 famine in Maharashtra<\/strong> and the <strong>1897 Bubonic plague.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>III. Literary work:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) Savitribai Phule published her first collection of poems, called <strong>Kavya Phule (\u2018Poetry\u2019s Blossoms\u2019) <\/strong>in 1854.<\/p>\n<p>2) She also wrote the famous poem<strong> &#8216;Go Get Education&#8217;<\/strong> to encourage the oppressed and backward classes to obtain an education.<\/p>\n<p>Savitribai Phule&#8217;s life concluded on <strong>March 10, 1897,<\/strong> as she succumbed to an illness while endeavoring to protect a sick 10-year-old boy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post has been created based on the article\u00a0\u201cSavitribai Phule Jayanti 2024: Celebrating India&#8217;s first woman teacher \u201dpublished in\u00a0\u201cBusiness Standard\u201d on 3rd January 2024.
