They were found at <strong>Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is Eurasian Otter?<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wii.gov.in\/images\/\/images\/documents\/ganga_project\/mammals_4.jpg?resize=407%2C273&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Eurasian Otter\" width=\"407\" height=\"273\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eurasian Otter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>1) Eurasian Otter is a <strong>semi-aquatic carnivorous<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>mammal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2) They are <strong>shy and nocturnal.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3) The Eurasian otter lives in a <strong>wide variety of aquatic habitats <\/strong>including highland and lowland lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, swamp forests and coastal areas independent of their size, origin or latitude.<\/p>\n<p>4) The species holds a conservation status of &#8220;<strong>Near Threatened&#8221; on the IUCN list.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5) It is classified under<strong> Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 <\/strong>and falls under\u00a0<strong>Appendix I of the CITES.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6) There are <strong>three species of otters found in Kerala,<\/strong> including <strong>Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), Smooth-coated Otter and Small-clawed Otter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What is the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary?<\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; height: 199px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\"><b>Specifications<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\"><b>Details<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\"><b>Location<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\">\u00a0Idukki District, Kerala<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 162px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\"><b>Geographical Features<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\">1) It is a prominent chunk of the block of protected forests growing in the Annamalai hills in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.<br \/>\n2) The sanctuary&#8217;s landscape is characterized by rocky terrains, hillocks, and valleys.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 74px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 39px;\"><strong>Wildlife Sanctuary <\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 39px;\">Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary is to its East and Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary\u00a0is to the north.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 162px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\"><b>Vegetation<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\">Dry Deciduous Forests, Wet Grasslands, High Sholas, Dry Thorny Scrub Forests, and Riparian Forests.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\"><b>Rivers<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 30px;\"><strong>Chinnar<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong> Pambar<\/strong> are the major rivers flowing\u00a0through it.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 60px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 40px;\"><b>Flora<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 40px;\">Among the 1000 species of flowering plants, some of the rarely found species include <strong>Elaeocarpus recurvatus, Arabica, Acacia leucophloea, Santalum album, Neelakurinji,<\/strong> etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 62px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 10px;\">1) The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary provides a home to endangered species such as <strong>Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Gaur, Rusty-Spotty Cat, Sambar, Nilgiri Tahr, Bonnet Macaques, Tufted Grey Langur, Spotted Deer<\/strong>, etc.<br \/>\n2) It is also famous for preserving a diverse range of birds such as <strong>Black Eagle, Yellow-throated Bulbuls, Grey Heron, Serpent Eagle, Little Egret<\/strong>, etc.<br \/>\n3) The sanctuary also houses 156 species of butterflies, 42 species of fishes and several other reptiles along with some notable insects.<br \/>\n4) It is the <strong>only rehabilitation centre for the Indian Star Tortoise<\/strong> in India.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post on Eurasian Otter has been created on the article &#8220;Eurasian Otter spotted in Kerala\u201d published in Times of India on 31st December 2023.
