{"id":276389,"date":"2024-01-05T16:19:39","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T10:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=276389"},"modified":"2024-01-05T16:19:39","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T10:49:39","slug":"zosurabalpin-new-antibiotic-identified-to-target-a-drug-resistant-bacterium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/zosurabalpin-new-antibiotic-identified-to-target-a-drug-resistant-bacterium\/","title":{"rendered":"Zosurabalpin: New antibiotic identified to target a drug-resistant bacterium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post is based on the article <strong>\u201cNew antibiotic identified to target a drug-resistant bacterium\u201d<\/strong> published in \u201c<b>The Hindu<\/b>\u201d on 4 January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in news?<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers have identified a new class of antibiotics called &#8216;Zosurabalpin&#8217; with the potential to tackle a drug-resistant bacterium, <span class=\"italic\">Acinetobacter baumannii<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Zosurabalpin?<\/h2>\n<p>1) Zosurabalpin is an <strong>antibody<\/strong> that is effective <strong>against CRAB (carbapenem-resistant <i>Acinetobacter baumannii<\/i>)-induced pneumonia and sepsis in mouse models.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2) Scientists identified a <strong>tethered macrocyclic peptide (MCP)<\/strong> that selectively kills A. baumannii which was <strong>further optimised<\/strong> for efficacy and tolerability, resulting in zosurabalpin.<\/p>\n<p>3) The antibiotic kills\u00a0<i>A. baumannii<\/i> through a previously unknown mode of action. It <strong>inhibits the transport of the molecule lipopolysaccharide (LPS)<\/strong> by inhibiting a complex of proteins.<\/p>\n<p>4) This complex was essential for transporting LPS to the bacterial surface to create the outer-membrane structure of Gram-negative bacteria.
