Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

MoEF&CC has nominated Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), and Udaipur (Rajasthan) for Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) Scheme?<\/h2>\n

What is it?<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is a voluntary system under the Ramsar Convention<\/strong> to acknowledge cities that have taken exceptional measures to conserve and protect urban and peri-urban wetlands.<\/strong> It was introduced in 2015.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Aim<\/strong><\/td>\nTo enhance the conservation and sustainable utilization of urban and peri-urban wetlands, providing socio-economic benefits for local communities.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Accreditation criteria<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Operational Guidance for WCA of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands encompasses six international criteria that a city must meet to qualify.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance for India<\/strong><\/td>\n1) The WCA allows cities to gain international recognition<\/strong> for their efforts<\/strong> in protecting their wetlands.
\n2) It will also raise public awareness<\/strong> about urban wetland conservation.
\n3) Further, it will aid in<\/strong> nationwide implementation of Amrit Dharohar <\/a><\/strong>initiative by MoEF&CC.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Important wetlands of these three nominated cities:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Indore<\/strong><\/td>\nBhopal<\/strong><\/td>\nUdaipur<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
The city has 2 Ramsar sites- Sirpur Lake<\/strong> and Yashwant Sagar<\/strong>.<\/td>\nBhoj Wetland<\/strong>, a Ramsar Site<\/td>\nThe city is surrounded by five major wetlands, namely, Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
