{"id":276621,"date":"2024-01-06T19:04:34","date_gmt":"2024-01-06T13:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=276621"},"modified":"2024-01-06T19:04:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-06T13:34:34","slug":"direct-to-mobile-technologyd2m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/direct-to-mobile-technologyd2m\/","title":{"rendered":"Direct-to-mobile technology(D2M)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source-<\/strong> This post is based on the article &#8220;<strong>Direct-to-mobile tech: DoT arm flags adoption hurdles<\/strong>&#8221; published in &#8220;<strong>Financial Express<\/strong>&#8221; on 3rd January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in the News?<\/h2>\n<p>The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) has identified challenges in implementing direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology which could allow streaming TV content directly to phones without an internet connection.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology?<\/h2>\n<p>1) Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology refers to the capability of delivering content, such as streaming television, directly to mobile devices <strong>without the need for an internet connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2) The technology is based on the <strong>convergence of broadband and broadcast<\/strong> using which mobile phones can receive terrestrial digital TV.<\/p>\n<p>3) It would be <strong>similar to how people listen to FM radio on their phones<\/strong> where a receiver within the phone can tap into radio frequencies.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid; height: 30px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 30px;\">For more information on D2M technology <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-d2m-technology-and-how-could-it-change-your-mobile-behaviour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to read<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>What are the Key Challenges Identified by TEC?<\/h2>\n<p>1)<strong> Integration challenge<\/strong>&#8211; Integration of smartphones supporting D2M and Digital Terrestrial TV to Mobile Devices (DTT2M) technologies poses a major challenge.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>Infrastructure requirements-<\/strong> Implementing D2M technologies like Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 also known as NextGen TV may require a new nationwide indoor network for quality services, adding complexity to the process.<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>Increased cost<\/strong>&#8211; Adoption of D2M technology could lead to higher cost for smartphone makers and consequently higher phone prices.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>Ecosystem and Viability concern<\/strong>&#8211; Challenges include availability of a handset ecosystem, scalability of D2M technology, business viability and opportunities and spectrum requirements.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the Suggestions Given by TEC?<\/h2>\n<p>1) For D2M technology, it is essential to have a <strong>standard, compatible with current mobile handsets<\/strong> to ensure cost-effectiveness and capitalize on the existing ecosystem support.<\/p>\n<p>2) The standard should <strong>facilitate offloading broadcasting traffic onto phones<\/strong>, enabling the design and manufacturing of smartphones capable of directly receiving broadcast signals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus- Science &amp; Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source- This post is based on the article &#8220;Direct-to-mobile tech: DoT arm flags adoption hurdles&#8221; published in &#8220;Financial Express&#8221; on 3rd January 2024.
