Of this, over <strong>50% <\/strong>of antibiotics prescribed have the<strong> potential to cause AMR<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>55% <\/strong>of the patients were prescribed antibiotics as <strong>prophylaxis<\/strong>, or as a preventive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>What according to the author is causing a rise in AMR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the author, due to a rise in the prophylactic use of antibiotics (a prophylactic is a medication, or a treatment used to <strong>prevent a disease from occurring<\/strong>), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming deadlier.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is AMR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>AMR occurs when pathogens evolve, fortifying themselves against drugs, and stop responding to antimicrobial drugs. This crisis is increasing due to unsound medical, and animal husbandry practices.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>WHO<\/strong>, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for <strong>1.27 million global deaths in 2019<\/strong> and <strong>contributed to 4.95 million deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the implications of rising AMR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the WHO, it invalidates the multiple gains that modern medicine has achieved over years in the following manner:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It makes infections harder to treat.<\/li>\n<li>It also makes performing other medical procedures and treatments such as surgery, caesarean sections and cancer chemotherapy much riskier.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>What steps should be taken?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Rational prescription of antibiotics<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curbs on the use of drugs to promote growth in animals and plants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antibiotic research and development: <\/strong>urgent measures are required to develop new drug candidates.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Equitable access <\/strong>to these new drugs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Role of doctors and the government:<\/strong> Their role in regulating use of drugs is crucial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Role of Patients:<\/strong> They are impatient with the medical process, expecting immediate relief to ailments.
