Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

India will launch the European Space Agency’s (ESA)<\/strong> pioneering Proba-3 mission<\/strong> in September 2024.<\/p>\n

What is Proba-3’s mission?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Led by:<\/strong> the European Space Agency (ESA)<\/p>\n

Launch vehicle:<\/strong> PSLV-XL rocket<\/p>\n

What is it?<\/strong> World\u2019s first precision formation flying mission.<\/p>\n

Aim:<\/strong> To form a 144-m long solar coronagraph, which will create an artificial eclipse, revealing new views of the Sun\u2019s faint corona.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Components:<\/strong> Proba-3 consists of two small satellites<\/strong> \u2014 a Coronagraph spacecraft<\/strong> and a solar-disc-shaped Occulter spacecraft.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A coronagraph<\/strong> is an instrument that will allow scientists to study the Sun’s elusive corona with unprecedented proximity and detail.<\/p>\n

What will it do?<\/strong> By flying in tight formation about 150 metres apart,<\/strong> the Occulter<\/strong> will precisely cast its shadow onto the Coronagraph\u2019s telescope, blocking the Sun\u2019s direct light. This will allow the Coronagraph to image the faint solar corona in visible,<\/strong> ultraviolet and polarised light for many hours at a time.<\/p>\n

What is the significance of the mission?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) Proba-3\u2019s unique positioning will provide new insights into the origins of coronal mass ejections (CMEs)<\/strong> eruptions of solar material<\/strong> that can disrupt satellites and power grids on Earth.<\/p>\n

2) The mission will also measure total solar irradiance,<\/strong> tracking changes in the Sun\u2019s energy output<\/strong> that may influence Earth\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n

3) The Proba-3’s formation flying also serves as a testbed for future multi-satellite missions.<\/strong><\/p>\n
