{"id":277511,"date":"2024-01-12T17:03:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T11:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=277511"},"modified":"2024-01-12T17:03:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T11:33:08","slug":"antimicrobial-resistance-overused-antibiotics-no-longer-work-for-sizeable-indian-population","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/antimicrobial-resistance-overused-antibiotics-no-longer-work-for-sizeable-indian-population\/","title":{"rendered":"Antimicrobial Resistance &#8211; Overused antibiotics no longer work for \u2018sizeable\u2019 Indian population"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post on Antimicrobial Resistance is based on the article <strong>&#8220;Overused antibiotics no longer work for \u2018sizeable\u2019 Indian population&#8221;<\/strong> published in<strong> &#8220;Live Mint&#8221;<\/strong> on 12 January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why in news?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently, it was found that antibiotics routinely prescribed to treat common ailments no longer work for the \u2018sizeable\u2019 Indian population.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is antimicrobial resistance?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) <strong>Antimicrobials<\/strong> including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitic are <strong>medicines used to prevent and treat infectious diseases<\/strong> in humans, animals and plants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) <strong>Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)<\/strong> occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines.<\/p>\n<p>3) AMR is a <strong>natural process<\/strong> that happens over time through <strong>genetic changes in pathogens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3)\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">I<\/span>ts emergence and spread are accelerated by <strong>human activity,<\/strong> mainly the <strong>misuse and overuse of antimicrobials to treat,<\/strong> prevent or control infections in humans, animals and plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)\u00a0For example,<\/strong> medicines like<em>\u00a0azithromycin<\/em> have been overly consumed during COVID-19, which has not only harmed the cell in body but also made pathogen non-respondent to the drug.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0Even\u00a0Colistin, also known as\u00a0<em>polymyxin E\u00a0<\/em>which is often seen as a last resort treatment for multidrug-resistant infections, including pneumonia, is not longer effective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">6) The World Health Organization recognizes AMR as one of the <strong>top 10 global public health threats,<\/strong> saying bacterial AMR killed 1.27 million globally in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>7) Priorities to address AMR in human health include<strong> preventing all infections,<\/strong> which may result in inappropriate use of antimicrobial; <strong>ensuring universal access to quality diagnosis<\/strong> and <strong>appropriate treatment of infections; and strategic information and innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Science and technology<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post on Antimicrobial Resistance is based on the article &#8220;Overused antibiotics no longer work for \u2018sizeable\u2019 Indian population&#8221; published in &#8220;Live Mint&#8221; on 12 January 2024.
