They were <strong>decommissioned after 40 years of service<\/strong>. The decommissioning event was conducted at <strong>Port Blair<\/strong> in a traditional ceremony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/Pics%286%29%281%290DS3.jpeg?resize=520%2C346&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"520\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What are these ships?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) Built at: <strong>Gdynia Shipyard, Poland.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) They are <strong>Polnocny class Landing Ships.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note: The\u00a0Polnocny class ships are\u00a0<strong>amphibious warfare vessels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3)The <strong>INS Cheetah<\/strong> joined the Indian Navy in <strong>1984,<\/strong> followed by <strong>Guldar in 1985<\/strong>, and<strong> Kumbhir in 1986.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4) They were initially <strong>stationed<\/strong> in mainland India before establishing their<strong> permanent base in the Andaman and Nicobar Command.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What was significance of these ships?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) Over the years, these ships <strong>traversed a staggering 17 lakh nautical miles,<\/strong> spending over 12,300 days at sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) They served as the <strong>backbone of amphibious operations<\/strong> in the region, conducting over <strong>1300 beaching operations <\/strong>to land troops ashore and secure the islands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) The ships played a crucial role in numerous<strong> maritime security missions<\/strong> and <strong>humanitarian assistance<\/strong> efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4) They participated in <strong>Operation Aman<\/strong> during the <strong>IPKF operations in Sri Lanka<\/strong> and <strong>Operation Tasha,<\/strong> a joint venture with the Indian Coast Guard <strong>to curb smuggling and illegal immigration. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">5) They also provided critical relief in the aftermath of the<strong> 1997 cyclone in Sri Lanka<\/strong> and the <strong>devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is amphibian operation?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) <b>Amphibious operations<\/b> are characterized\u00a0by attacks launched from the sea by naval and landing forces against hostile shores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) The primary approach is the amphibious assault, utilized to initiate land-based combat operations, seize strategic naval or air bases, or deny the enemy use of a specific site or area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>UPSC syllabus: Internal security<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post has been created based on article &#8220;INS Cheetah, Guldar and Kumbhir were decommissioned after 40 years of glorious service&#8221; published in &#8220;PIB&#8221; on 13th January 2024.
