{"id":278033,"date":"2024-01-16T17:11:40","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T11:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=278033"},"modified":"2024-01-16T17:11:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T11:41:40","slug":"kachchhi-kharek-of-gujarat-got-gi-tag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kachchhi-kharek-of-gujarat-got-gi-tag\/","title":{"rendered":"Kachchhi Kharek of Gujarat got GI tag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post is based on the article <strong>&#8221; Kachchhi Kharek, indigenous dates of Kutch, become Gujarat\u2019s 2nd fruit to get GI tag&#8221;<\/strong> published in <strong>&#8220;The Indian Express&#8221;<\/strong> on 13th January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"synopsis\">Recently, Kachchhi Kharek, the indigenous variety of dates of Kutch, has become the second fruit of Gujarat to get a geographical indication (GI) tag.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 492px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.indianexpress.com\/2024\/01\/gujarat-fruit.jpg?resize=492%2C277&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"492\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kachchhi Kharek Palm Source: Indian express<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What is Kachchhi Kharek?<\/h2>\n<p>It is the<strong> indigenous variety of dates of Kutch, Gujarat.\u00a0<\/strong>The presence of dates in Kachchh (Kutch) is believed to be <strong>around 400\u2013500 years old. <\/strong>It has <strong>become the second fruit of Gujarat<\/strong> to get a geographical indication (GI) tag, after <strong>Gir kesar mango<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Origin:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Date palm groves along the <strong>north-western border of India<\/strong> likely originated from <strong>seeds discarded<\/strong> by settlers visiting the Middle East for Haj and <strong>trade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Arab gardeners<\/strong> working in the palaces of former rulers in Kachchh(Kutch) may have also contributed to importing date seeds and offshoots from Arab countries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Unique features: <\/strong>Unlike other countries, dates grown in Kutch are harvested at the <strong style=\"color: var(--global--color-primary); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">khalal stage,<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00a0<strong>they can\u2019t withstand moist weather. <\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--list--font-family); background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Kutch\u00a0 is the <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: var(--list--font-family); background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">only place around the world<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--list--font-family); background-color: var(--global--color-background); color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\"> where fresh dates (Without wait for getting it dark or soft) are economically cultivated, marketed, and consumed. Whereas in other countries, growers wait to ripen it further till they become soft and dark brown or black in colour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The <strong>khalal stage<\/strong> occurs when fruits have matured, accumulated sucrose, turned red or yellow, but remain crisp.<\/p>\n<p>As these are\u00a0<strong>seedling propagated palms<\/strong>, each of them is a unique palm in itself, representing a<strong>\u00a0vast<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>range of diversity in characteristics. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cultivation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kutch is home to approximately two million date palms, with <strong>1.7 million being seedling-origin palms of indigenous varieties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kachchh area is accounting for more than<strong> 85 % of total dates palm cultivation in India.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What are Geographical Indications (GI) tag?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A geographical indication or GI is used on <strong>products that have a specific geographical origin<\/strong> and <strong>possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Geographical Indications are part of the <strong>intellectual property rights.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Awarded by: <\/strong>Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDT) of India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Administered by:<\/strong> Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>protect<\/strong> the authenticity and uniqueness of the products.<\/li>\n<li><strong>promote<\/strong> the economic and social development of the local communities that produce the products and preserve their traditional knowledge and skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>enhance<\/strong> the market value and consumer demand of the products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post is based on the article &#8221; Kachchhi Kharek, indigenous dates of Kutch, become Gujarat\u2019s 2nd fruit to get GI tag&#8221; published in &#8220;The Indian Express&#8221; on 13th January 2024.
