{"id":278090,"date":"2024-01-16T17:04:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T11:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=278090"},"modified":"2024-01-16T17:11:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T11:41:54","slug":"india-argentina-agreement-on-lithium-mines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-argentina-agreement-on-lithium-mines\/","title":{"rendered":"India-Argentina Agreement on Lithium Mines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post is based on the article <strong>&#8220;India Signs Agreement for Lithium Exploration &amp; Mining Project in Argentina&#8221;<\/strong> published in <strong>&#8220;PIB&#8221;<\/strong> on 15 January 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in news?<\/h2>\n<p>Recently, India signed an agreement to acquire five lithium brine blocks for exploration and development in Argentina.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is this agreement?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) <strong>Agreement Signed Between<\/strong> <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>India and Argentina<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) <strong>Enterprises involved<\/strong> &#8211; Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) and Catamarca Minera Y Energ\u00e9tica Sociedad Del Estado (CAMYEN)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) <strong>Aim:<\/strong> Bringing sustainable development to the mining sector, ensuring a resilient and diversified supply chain for critical and strategic minerals essential for various industries.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the significance of the agreement?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) This is the <strong>first-ever lithium exploration and mining project<\/strong> signed by a state-owned company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) By securing lithium blocks in Argentina, India will propel its <strong>quest for self-reliance in meeting clean energy demand.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) It will also <strong>help in bringing in technical and operational experience<\/strong> <strong>for brine type lithium exploration<\/strong>, exploitation and extraction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4) This agreement will also aid India\u2019s objective <strong>to attain net-zero emissions by 2070<\/strong> and establish itself as a <strong>manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the status of lithium in India?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) India&#8217;s first major lithium reserve has been found in the<strong> Salal-Haimana area of Reasi District in Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong>. Some small reserves are also present in <strong>Karnataka.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) Currently, the country lithium demand is met through <strong>100% import. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) In the fiscal year 2023, India witnessed a surge in lithium imports, reaching <strong>around $3 billion (approximately \u20b924,900 crore)<\/strong>, reflecting a 58% rise compared to the figures in FY22.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4) Over <strong>95 per cent of India\u2019s lithium imports<\/strong> originate from<strong> China and Hong Kong.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub_head\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Where are the world\u2019s lithium reserves?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) <strong>Worldwide Reserves<\/strong> &#8211; 89 million tonnes at the start of 2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2)<strong> Mineable parts<\/strong> <strong>out of reserves<\/strong> &#8211; 22 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) <strong>Half of the world\u2019s lithium resources<\/strong> are concentrated in <strong>Latin America (mostly Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina), Australia, and China. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4) <strong>Argentina holds 20 per cent of the world\u2019s 98 million tonnes of lithium resources,<\/strong> second only to Bolivia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">5) Argentina is also part of the <strong>\u201cLithium Triangle\u201d<\/strong> along with Chile and Bolivia, which together hold more than half of the world\u2019s total lithium resources.<\/p>\n<p>Note: The Lithium Triangle is a\u00a0<strong>region of the Andes that is rich in lithium reserves<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) Argentina has <strong>second-largest lithium resources<\/strong>, <strong>third-largest lithium reserves<\/strong> and <strong>forth largest production in the world.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>UPSC Syllabus: Minerals and resource, International agreements<\/b><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post is based on the article &#8220;India Signs Agreement for Lithium Exploration &amp; Mining Project in Argentina&#8221; published in &#8220;PIB&#8221; on 15 January 2024.
