Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Scientists have recently discovered a new species of fungus in Kerala, named \u2018Paramyrothecium indicum\u2019.<\/p>\n

What is ‘Paramyrothecium indicum’?<\/h2>\n

1. It is a new species of phytopathogenic fungus.<\/span>
\nNote<\/strong>– phytopathogenic fungus is associated with emerging leaf spots on the wild hibiscus plans near Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a> <\/span>in Thrissur district of Kerala.<\/p>\n

2. Phytopathogens are parasites<\/span> that thrive on a host plant.<\/p>\n

3. The majority of Paramyrothecium<\/span> species are considered phytopathogens.<\/p>\n

4. Phytopathogen fungi are responsible for serious plant diseases<\/span> which might negatively affect crop productivity.<\/p>\n

5. Leaf spots<\/span> caused by Paramyrothecium represent a fungal disease capable of affecting various plant species.<\/p>\n

6. Certain Paramyrothecium species generate secondary metabolites<\/span> with bio-herbicidal potential, suggesting their potential use in weed control<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) They include a wide range of organisms, such as mushrooms, molds, yeasts<\/span>, rusts, smuts, mildews.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Fungi are distinct from plants, animals, and bacteria, forming their own kingdom.<\/p>\n

4) They are eukaryotic organisms<\/span>, meaning their cells possess membrane-bound organelles and well-defined nuclei.<\/p>\n

5) Reproduction<\/strong>: Fungi usually reproduce both sexually and asexually<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
