Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Odisha government has recently announced the establishment of the world’s first melanistic tiger safari.<\/p>\n

About the Melanistic tiger safari<\/h2>\n

1) The safari is set to be developed near Baripada, the district headquarter of Mayurbhanj<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) A 200-hectare site adjacent to National Highway-18<\/span> has been earmarked for this initiative.<\/p>\n

3) It is located near the Similipal Tiger Reserve(STR)<\/a> in Mayurbhanj.<\/p>\n

What are Melanistic tigers?<\/h2>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nBlack tigers (also known as Melanistic Royal Bengal Tiger) are a rare colour variant of the Bengal tiger. These are<\/span> <\/span>not a distinct species or geographic subspecies.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Location<\/strong><\/td>\nThey have been recorded only in the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Population<\/strong><\/td>\nIn the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation, in Similipal Tiger Reserve, 10 melanistic tigers were<\/span> reported out of the total 16 tigers in the reserve.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conservation Status<\/strong><\/td>\nIUCN: Endangered<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
