Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

Lake Retba, located in Senegal, is under threat of extinction due to increase in Nitrate level and pollution.<\/p>\n

About the lake Retba<\/h2>\n

Location<\/strong>– Lake Retba is also known as Lac Rose (meaning “pink lake”). It is located in Senegal.<\/p>\n

Nearest ocean<\/strong>– Lake Retba is separated only by some narrow dunes from the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong><\/p>\n

Salinity<\/strong>– The lake has high salinity content (comparable to that of the Dead Sea)<\/p>\n

World heritage listing<\/strong>– It is under consideration by UNESCO<\/strong> for World Heritage Site Status.<\/p>\n

Aquatic life<\/strong>– Due to high salinity, many living organisms are not<\/strong> able to survive (Exceptions being a few microscopic algae and bacteria).<\/p>\n

Why is the colour of lake pink?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) Its distinct pink colour is caused by the Dunaliella salina bacteria<\/strong>. This is attracted by the lake\u2019s salt content.<\/p>\n

2) The bacteria produces a red pigment to absorb the sunlight, thus giving the lake its unique colour.<\/p>\n

3) The Dunaliella salina bacteria is harmless to humans, and swimming in the lake is possible.<\/p>\n

Lake Bosumtwi<\/span> in Ghana is the\u00a0largest natural lake<\/span> in West Africa.<\/p>\n

Lake Volta<\/span> in Ghana is the largest man-made reservoir<\/span> in the world.<\/p>\n

Lake Chad<\/span> is a man-made reservoir located in Chad.<\/p>\n
