{"id":27974,"date":"2018-10-23T17:24:03","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T11:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27974"},"modified":"2018-10-23T17:24:03","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T11:54:03","slug":"khangchendzonga-biosphere-reserve-enters-unesco-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/khangchendzonga-biosphere-reserve-enters-unesco-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve enters UNESCO list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/khangchendzonga-biosphere-reserve-enters-unesco-list\/article24659847.ece\">Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve enters UNESCO list<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Recently, the Khangchendongza Biosphere Reserve (KBR) has been included in the UNESCO\u2019s World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important Facts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The decision of inclusion was taken at the 30<sup>th<\/sup>session of the International Coordinating Council of Man and Biosphere Reserve Programme, UNESCO, held in Indonesia<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biosphere Reserves in India<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 18 Biosphere Reserves in India. 11 of the biosphere reserves are included in the world network of Biosphere Reserves, the latest being KBR<\/li>\n<li>The last biosphere reserve to be included was the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve in Kerala in 2016.<\/li>\n<li>The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve was the first reserve from the country to be included in the WNBR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>KBR is one of the 34 biodiversity hotspots of the world<\/li>\n<li>KBR comprises 41% of the entire geographical area of Sikkim and spreads over 2931\u00a0sq.km<\/li>\n<li>The core area comprises of 1784\u00a0sq.km\u00a0and the buffer zone spreads across 835\u00a0sq.km.\u00a0\u00a0311 sq km comprises transition area between habitation and the biosphere reserve<\/li>\n<li>The Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) comprises the core area of the KBR and has been designated as a \u201cMixed World Heritage Site\u201d<\/li>\n<li>86% of the core lies in the Alpine zone and remaining are located in the Himalayan wet temperate and sub tropical moist deciduous forest.<\/li>\n<li>According to the Sikkim Forest Department, there are 4,500 species of flowering plants in the KBR<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Major fauna includes Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Beer, and Musk deer, Great Tibetan Sheep, Blue Sheep, Boral and Barking Deer.
