{"id":28026,"date":"2018-10-23T17:41:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T12:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28026"},"modified":"2018-10-23T17:41:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T12:11:40","slug":"thirty-years-after-the-8888-uprising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/thirty-years-after-the-8888-uprising\/","title":{"rendered":"Thirty years after the 8888 uprising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/thirty-years-after-the-8888-uprising\/article24618729.ece\">Thirty years after the 8888 uprising<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Article:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Nehginpao Kipgen, Associate Professor , O.P Jindal Global University, discussed \u00a0that Myanmar\u2019s stability and development can be achieved by resolving the issues of equality and federalism.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>August 8, this year marks the 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the people\u2019s uprising (8888 uprising) in Myanmar.<\/li>\n<li><u>About \u20188888\u2019 uprising:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u20188888\u2019 uprising is one of Myanmar\u2019s most important historic days in the context of pro-democracy movement.<\/li>\n<li>It was a people\u2019s movement that challenged the then ruling Burma Socialist Programme party\u2019s grip on political, economic and social affairs which led the country into extreme poverty.<\/li>\n<li>The protest gave rise to the National League for Democracy (NLD), which paved the way for the current Myanmar state counselor, Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s entry into politics.<\/li>\n<li><u>The objective of \u20188888\u2019 uprising was twofold:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>To push for the transfer of power from the military to a civilian leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Change in political system from an authoritarian regime to a multi-party democracy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>For the country\u2019s ethnic minorities, their political demands that date back to before Myanmaar\u2019s independence in 1948 continue.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Burma ethnic armed group have demanded a federal democracy that guarantees autonomy and self-determination in their respective areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The day has also been observed in different parts of the world including Myanmar by Burmese expatriates.<\/li>\n<li><u>But , year\u2019s programme in Myanmar is significant for two reasons:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It keeps alive the spirit of democracy and underscores the need for equality and federalism.<\/li>\n<li>Builds an awareness campaign on the role of military.<\/li>\n<li>This year anniversary committee has laid emphases on the importance of federalism and equality.<\/li>\n<li>The success of 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Panglong Conference or peace talk will depend on these two key issues:- Equality and Federalism.<\/li>\n<li>Myanmar\u2019s peace, stability and development also depend on these two issues (Equality and Federalism).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>The political change in Myanmar was designed by the military.<\/li>\n<li>Even the country\u2019s 2008 Constitution gave the military a dominant role in politics.<\/li>\n<li>From 2016, Ms Sunn Kyi and the NLD formed the first civilian government in the country.<\/li>\n<li>Myanmar now practices the \u2018Burmese way to democracy\u2019 , introduced by former PM Khin Nyunt in 2003 when he announced the military\u2019s seven-step road map to a flourishing democracy.<\/li>\n<li><u>The author gave the following suggestions for stability and democracy in Myanmar.<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the author\u2019s view the \u20188888\u2019 leaders should look at democratic transitions in other countries.<\/li>\n<li>They should share their findings not only with the civilian government but also with the military leadership.<\/li>\n<li>According to the author no democracy can succeed when the military holds the rein and is unaccountable to an elected civilian leadership.<\/li>\n<li>For democracy, the role of the \u20188888\u2019 leaders remains important.<\/li>\n<li>The military in Myanmar should note that all countries want a democracy that respects the rights of its entire people including the minorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty years after the 8888 uprising Article: Nehginpao Kipgen, Associate Professor , O.P Jindal Global University, discussed \u00a0that Myanmar\u2019s stability and development can be achieved by resolving the issues of equality and federalism.
