Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Indian express has recently published an article about E Ink and why it could not conquer all our screens despite its advantages.<\/p>\n

What are E-Ink displays?<\/h2>\n

An E-ink display is a screen that aims to replicate the experience of reading and writing<\/span> on paper. They are used in e-readers like the Amazon Kindle.<\/p>\n

The screens work by using tiny microcapsules<\/span>. These microcapsules are filled with positively charged<\/span> white particles and negatively charged<\/span> black particles. These particles are suspended in fluid<\/span> inside the display.<\/p>\n

When positive or negative electrical charges are applied to different areas of the screen, the white or black particles can be made to rise to the surface<\/span>. Rising\u00a0of particles to the surface creates the text<\/span> and images<\/span> on the display<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Advantages of E-Ink displays<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) They consume less power<\/span> compared to LCD and OLED displays.
\n2) They can display a static image for weeks or months without needing a charge<\/span>. This makes them ideal for long battery life.
\n3) They cause less strain<\/span> on the user’s eyes<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages of E-Ink displays<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) They have slow refresh rate<\/span> compared to LCD and OLED displays. This makes them unsuitable<\/span> for video or animation
\n2) They have limitations<\/span> of\u00a0colour<\/span> and resolution<\/span> compared to other display technologies.
\n3) They are expensive,<\/span> especially in larger sizes. This limits their use to mostly e-readers.<\/p>\n

Other application of E-Ink displays<\/strong><\/p>\n

They are being used at bus stop displays, walking direction signs, and some restaurants’ menu boards.<\/p>\n
