This group also contains dugongs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 150px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 12.303%; height: 150px;\"><strong>Types<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 87.697%; height: 150px;\">There are three species, or types, of manatee:-<br \/>\n1) The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Amazonian manatee<\/span> lives in the Amazon River and in fresh water in South America. This species is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">only<\/span> found in<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> freshwater<\/span>.<br \/>\n2) The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">African manatee<\/span> lives in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tropical West Africa<\/span>.<br \/>\n3) The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Caribbean manatee<\/span> is found in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Florida<\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">West Indies<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 12.303%;\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 87.697%;\">1) <strong>Size<\/strong>-Adult manatees may reach a length of 15 feet (4.6 meters) and a weight of 1,660 kilograms. <strong>Females<\/strong> tend to be larger and <strong>heavier<\/strong> than <strong>males<\/strong>.<br \/>\n2) <strong>Diet<\/strong>-They are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">herbivores<\/span>. They spend up to eight hours a day grazing and can consume 4 to 9 percent of their body weight in aquatic vegetation daily.<br \/>\n3) <strong>Behavior <\/strong>&#8211; They are generally <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">solitary animals<\/span>.<br \/>\n-In order to breathe, they must swim to the water\u2019s surface for air.<br \/>\n-Dugongs and manatees are very similar in appearance and behavior, but there is one key difference:-Manatees have paddle-shaped tails, and dugongs have fluked tails, giving it a whale-like appearance.<br \/>\n4) <strong>Lifespan<\/strong>: 50 to 60 years.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 60px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 12.303%; height: 60px;\"><strong>Conservation status<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 87.697%; height: 60px;\"><strong>IUCN<\/strong>-All 3 species are<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> vulnerable.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 210px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 12.303%; height: 210px;\"><strong>Threats<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 87.697%; height: 210px;\">1) Habitat destruction.<br \/>\n2) Their curious nature seldom leads to violent <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">collisions with propeller driven ships and boats.<\/span><br \/>\n3) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Red tides<\/span> are major threats to the manatee. Red tide is the discolouration of sea surface due to algal blooms.<br \/>\n4)They are entangled in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">fishing gear<\/span>, water control structures such as floodgates, navigation locks, etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>NOTE- Dugong<\/strong>-They are also called the sea cow. They are the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">herbivorous mammal<\/span>.
