Researchers have estimated that a wheat blast disease<\/strong><\/span> that may spread in the future could reduce global wheat production by 13% by 2050.<\/strong><\/p>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is a fungal disease<\/span> that affects wheat production in tropical and subtropical regions.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Caused by<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nMagnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum (MoT)<\/span>. It was identified in Brazil in 1985. The fungus<\/span> infects wild and cultivated grasses, most notably rice<\/span> and wheat.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Transmission<\/strong><\/td>\nIt spreads through infected seeds, crop residues, and spores<\/span> that can travel long distances in the air.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Favourable condition<\/strong><\/td>\nIt thrives in warm<\/span> and humid<\/span> conditions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Effects<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It causes progressive bleaching of the heads, lower yields, and poor seed quality.
\n2) Stems and leaves are discoloured<\/span>, with dark brown, eye-shaped lesions on leaves.
\n3) Sometimes dark grey spores<\/span> can be seen.
\n4) It can shrivel and deform the grain in less than a week from the first symptoms.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

About Wheat<\/h2>\n

1) It is the main cereal crop in India. It is the second most important<\/span> cereal crop in India after rice.<\/p>\n

2)Type<\/strong>– It is a Rabi Crop<\/span> which is sown in October-December<\/span> and harvested during April-June.<\/p>\n

3) Ideal temperature<\/strong>: Between 23\u00b13\u00b0C<\/p>\n

4) Rainfall<\/strong>: 50 cm to 100 cm rainfall.<\/p>\n

5) Soil Type<\/strong>: Soils with a clay loam or loam texture, good structure and moderate water holding capacity are ideal for wheat cultivation.<\/p>\n

6) Major wheat growing states in India<\/strong>: Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat.<\/p>\n

Note-1)<\/strong> Asia\u2019s first outbreak<\/span> of this pathogenic wheat blast was reported in Bangladesh<\/span> in 2016.
\n2) China<\/span> is the world’s largest producer<\/span> of wheat. India<\/span> is the second-largest<\/span> producer of wheat.<\/p>\n
