Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

AstroSat, India\u2019s first, dedicated multi-wavelength astronomy mission, has achieved a remarkable feat by measuring X-ray polarisation from the Cygnus X-1 black hole.<\/p>\n

1) It is one of the first confirmed black hole<\/span> systems in our galaxy that was discovered over four decades ago.<\/p>\n

2) Its distance from the earth is about<\/span> 400 times of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the distance between Earth and Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) It\u00a0is 20 times heavier than the Sun<\/span>, and has a companion – a heavy supergiant star (40 times more massive than the Sun) in a binary system.<\/p>\n

4) Due to the gravitational pull of the black hole<\/span>, material from the supergiant falls and spirals in towards the black hole. This process leads to the formation of a thin accretion disk<\/span>, which is responsible for soft X-rays.<\/p>\n

Importance of X-rays polarisation<\/h2>\n

1)\u00a0 X-ray polarimetry is a unique observational technique<\/span> to identify where radiation<\/span> comes from near black holes.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Unlike normal X-ray measurements which measure only the energy or intensity of the radiations<\/span>, polarisation characteristics of X-rays tells about the orientation of the oscillating electric field.<\/span> This hold clues on the geometry<\/span> and other properties of the black hole<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3) The measurement of high polarisation in the 100-380 keV range suggests that radiation emitted from the source above 100 keV may have originated from the<\/span> black hole jet.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE-1)<\/strong> AstroSat<\/span> is India\u2019s first dedicated<\/span> Space Astronomy Observatory.<\/p>\n

2) The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE)<\/span> is NASA\u2019s first<\/span> mission to study polarisation<\/span> of X-rays from celestial objects.<\/p>\n
