Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The 7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was held from 29th January 2024 to 2nd February 2024 at Kochi.<\/p>\n

About Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs<\/h2>\n

Background<\/strong>– The Indian officials had asked for the establishment of an exclusive Committee<\/span> for Spices, Culinary Herbs. This was demanded to ensure harmony and transparency<\/span> in fixing global quality standards for spices, herbs and formulations.<\/p>\n

Established<\/strong>-It was established as one of the Commodity Committees under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC)<\/span> in 2013.<\/p>\n

Secretariat<\/strong>-India hosts this prestigious Committee since the beginning and Spices Board of India serves as the secretariat organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outcome of 7th session<\/strong>-The quality standards for 5 spices, namely small cardamom, turmeric, juniper berry, allpice and star anise<\/span> were finalised.<\/p>\n

Significance<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Its standards are recognized by the WTO<\/span> to resolve trade disputes<\/span> concerning food safety and consumer protection.<\/span>
\n2) It contributes to harmonization of food standards<\/span> across the globe. This facilitates fair global trade in food.
\n3) It ensures food safety to safeguard<\/span> the health of global consumers.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

About Spice Board Of India<\/h2>\n

1) Established<\/strong>– This is a statutory body<\/span> constituted under Spices Board Act 1986<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) Mandate<\/strong>– It has the responsibility of production\/development of cardamom and export promotion of 52 spices shown<\/span> in the schedule of the Act.<\/p>\n

3) Headquarter<\/strong>– The board is headquartered in Kochi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4) The board has a state-of-the-art testing laboratory at its headquarters in Kochi. There are also regional laboratories at Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Tuticorin, Kandla and Guntur<\/span>.<\/p>\n
