Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

As per the survey conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India in 2016-2017 in Ladakh region, the population size of black necked crane is around 66-69 individuals.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nThe black-necked crane is a medium-sized crane in Asia<\/span> that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau and remote parts of India and Bhutan.
\nBoth the sexes are almost of the same size<\/span>, but male is slightly bigger than female.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Population<\/strong>
\ndistribution<\/strong><\/td>\n		The high altitude wetlands of the Tibetan plateau, Sichuan (China), and eastern Ladakh (India)<\/span> are the main breeding ground of the species. However, the birds spend winter at lower altitudes.
\nIt is also found in Arunachal Pradesh’s valleys- Sangti valley<\/span>, Zemithang <\/span>and Chug valley.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conservation status<\/strong><\/td>\nIUCN Red List- Near Threatened <\/span>(NT)

\nIndian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972- Schedule I<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Threats<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Damage to the eggs and chicks, caused by feral dogs.<\/span>
\n2) Increasing grazing pressure<\/span> on the limited pastures near the wetlands.
\n3) Loss of habitat due to development projects on the wetlands.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conservation efforts<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Notified Protected areas-<\/strong><\/span> The important habitats of Black-necked Crane have been notified as a Protected Areas. For ex-<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Changthang Sanctuary, Ladakh.<\/span><\/span>
\n2) Designated Wetlands-<\/strong> The Tso Kar Wetlands Complex<\/span>, an important foraging and breeding ground for Black-necked Crane has been designated as a Ramsar Site.<\/span><\/span>
\n3) Financial assistance- <\/strong>The\u00a0Central Government provide<\/span>s<\/span> financial assistance<\/span> to State\/Union Territory Governments under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of <\/span><\/span>\u2018Development of Wildlife Habitats<\/span>\u2019.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Religious significance<\/strong><\/td>\nThe bird is revered by Monpas<\/span> (a major Buddhist ethnic group<\/span> of Arunachal Pradesh<\/span>) as an embodiment of the sixth Dalai Lama<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
