A multibillion-dollar dam project on river Mekong in Laos’s Luang Prabang city, may result in the city losing its UNESCO status.<\/p>\n

Biodiversity<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is the second most biodiverse river basin<\/span> in the world, after Amazon River Basin. It contains about 20,000 plant species,1,200 birds, 430 mammals, 800 amphibians and reptiles, and 850 fish species.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Capital cities on its banks<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Vientiane<\/span>– the capital of Laos<\/span>
\n2) Phnom Penh<\/span>-the capital of Cambodia<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance for India<\/strong><\/td>\n1) The Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC)<\/span> is an initiative by six countries \u2013 India and five ASEAN countries<\/span> \u2013 Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
\n2) Mekong Delta is a potential source of regional tension<\/span>\u00a0due to an increasing number of hydroelectric projects that are altering the flow and raising concerns of ecological damage.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Note-Luang Prabang<\/strong>– It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/span> where as per legend Buddha<\/span> once rested during his travels.<\/p>\n
