It is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">world&#8217;s second-largest land tortoise species<\/span>, after the Galapagos giant tortoise.<br \/>\n2. These tortoise have <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">descended from ancestors of Aldabrachelys abrupta<\/span>, one of two giant tortoises that lived in Madagascar for 15 million years.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Lifespan<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\">It has a lifespan of about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">100 years<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Population Distribution<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\">These are endemic to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles<\/span>, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, approximately 930 miles east of Africa and northeast of Madagascar.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\">1. These tortoises live on land and inhabit diverse environments such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">scrub forests, mangrove swamps, and coastal dunes and beaches.<\/span><br \/>\n2. Grasslands named &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">platins<\/span>&#8221; harbour the largest populations of tortoises.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Conservation Status<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\"><strong>IUCN<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Vulnerable<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>CITES<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Appendix II\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Physical Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\">1. They are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dark gray to black<\/span> with a strongly domed, thick shell.<br \/>\n2. Aldabra tortoises show <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sexual dimorphism<\/span>, meaning males and females have different appearances.<br \/>\n3. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Males are much bigger than females<\/span> and have longer, thicker tails.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 70%;\">1. They are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vital in keeping the ecological balance<\/span> in a habitat <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">mosaic <\/span>(a place where different habitats exist side by side).<br \/>\n2. They consume fruits from different trees. These then spread the seeds through their dung, aiding in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">megafauna-dependent germination<\/span>.
