Kaladan project is getting delayed due to ongoing Political crisis in Myanmar.<\/p>\n

About Kaladan multimodal Project<\/h2>\n

Background<\/strong>-The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project was jointly identified by India and Myanmar<\/span> to create a multi-modal mode of transport<\/span> for the shipment of cargo from the eastern ports of India to Myanmar.<\/p>\n

Details of project:
\n<\/strong>1) It connects the eastern Indian seaport of Kolkata<\/span> with Sittwe<\/span> seaport in Rakhine State, Myanmar by sea. It will reduce the distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1,328 km.<\/span>
\n2) In Myanmar, it will then link<\/span> Sittwe seaport<\/span> to Paletwa<\/span> in Chin State<\/span> via the Kaladan river boat route
\n3) From Paletwa by road to Mizoram state in Northeast India <\/span>(Paletwa is less than 20 km from the Bangladesh border).<\/p>\n

Components of project<\/strong>: The project involves sea, river, and road transportation:<\/p>\n

Sea Route:<\/strong> From Kolkata to Sittwe (539 km).<\/p>\n

River Route:<\/strong> Sittwe to Paletwa via the Kaladan River (158 km).<\/p>\n

Road Route:<\/strong> Paletwa to Indo-Myanmar border (110 km), and further into Mizoram.<\/p>\n

Significance of the project<\/h2>\n

A) Economic significance<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) The project will reduce the distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1,328 km. It will reduce the need to transport goods through the narrow Siliguri corridor.<\/span>
\n2) This project will connect Sittwe Port in Myanmar to the India-Myanmar border. It will contribute to the economic development of the North-Eastern States of India<\/span>, by opening up the sea route for the products.<\/p>\n

B) Strategic significance<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) This would enhance India\u2019s strategic footprints in East Asia<\/span> and more importantly in our immediate neighbourhood.
\n2) It provides an alternative to the Chicken’s Neck<\/span>. This will lead to enhanced India’s control over its northeastern frontier<\/span> and reduced logistical vulnerabilities<\/span>.
\n3) It will strengthen India’s Act East Policy.<\/span><\/p>\n
