Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The government recently reiterated its intention to introduce satellite-based toll collection on highways<\/span> prior to the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha election.<\/p>\n

What is Satellite-based toll collection system?<\/h2>\n

1. It is a GPS based<\/span> toll collection system.<\/p>\n

2. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)<\/span> will implement this system.<\/p>\n

3. It\u00a0will enable vehicles to move freely<\/span> without the need to stop for toll payments.<\/p>\n

4. It\u00a0will capture the vehicle’s registration plate photo<\/span> and debit the toll amount based on the actual distance traveled by the vehicle<\/span> on the highway.<\/p>\n

5. Every vehicle in this GPS-based toll collection system will need an onboard unit (OBU)<\/span> linked to a constellation of satellites.. The OBU will also connect to a wallet<\/span> for toll deductions.<\/p>\n

6. It will replace<\/span> the existing radio frequency identification-based FASTag system<\/a> (Fastag was rolled out in 2016 and it was made mandatory from January 2021).<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– Currently, this GPS based toll collection system is in the trial phase.<\/p>\n
