The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has successfully established and tested India\u2019s first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility recently.<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong>-The S2, nicknamed ‘Jigarthanda<\/span>‘, is a 24-meter-long facility<\/span> located at IIT Kanpur\u2019s Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory (HEAL) within the Department of Aerospace Engineering.<\/p>\n

Designed by<\/strong>-It was indigenously designed and developed<\/span> over three years by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and IIT Kanpur.<\/p>\n

Funding<\/strong>-The development of the facility was supported by the Fund for Improvement in S&T Infrastructure (FIST) of the Department of Science & Technology (DST)<\/span> with a sum of Rs 4.5 Crores in 2018.<\/p>\n

Speed range<\/strong>-It is capable of generating flight speeds between 3-10 km\/s.<\/span> It can simulate<\/span> the hypersonic conditions encountered during the atmospheric entry of vehicles<\/span>, asteroid entry<\/span>, scramjet flights<\/span>, and ballistic missiles<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Significance of India\u2019s first hypervelocity test facility<\/h2>\n

1) It will be a critical asset<\/span> for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)<\/span> and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).<\/span><\/p>\n

2) It will serve as a testing ground for ongoing missions of ISRO and DRDO like Gaganyaan<\/a>, Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLV), and hypersonic cruise missiles<\/span>. This will enable the development of more advanced and reliable aerospace technologies<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3) It puts India amongst a handful<\/span> of countries with this advanced hypersonic testing<\/span> capability.<\/p>\n

4) It is a major capacity boost<\/span> for India’s space and defense sectors<\/span>. It also puts India in a better position to develop advanced hypersonic<\/span> technologies.<\/p>\n

NOTE-Aeronautical Research and Development Board (ARDB)<\/strong>– It is the national body<\/span> for coordinating and funding futuristic research\/development programmes in Aeronautics<\/span>.<\/p>\n

It was established on recommendation of Subramanian Committee report<\/span> and was constituted by the Government of India in 1971.<\/p>\n
