Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

MoSPI has recently released the results of Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) for the reference periods April 2020 to March 2021.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong>-It is the primary source of industrial statistics<\/span> in the country.<\/p>\n

Statutory provision<\/strong>-From ASI 2010-11 onwards, the survey is being conducted annually under the statutory provisions of the Collection of Statistics (COS) Act, 2008<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Conducted by<\/strong>– Central Statistics Office (CSO) Industrial Statistics (IS)<\/span> wing under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scope and coverage<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) The ASI extends to the entire<\/span> country.<\/p>\n

2) It covers all factories registered under Sections 2(m)(i) and 2(m)(ii) of the Factories Act, 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) The survey also covers Bidi and cigar manufacturing establishments<\/span> registered under the Bidi and Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment) Act 1966.<\/p>\n

4) All electricity undertakings engaged in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, not registered with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA)<\/span> are also covered under ASI.<\/p>\n

5) Units with 100 or more employees<\/span> registered in the Business Register of Establishments (BRE) prepared and maintained by the State Governments.<\/p>\n

6) It does not cover unorganised<\/span> or unregistered<\/span> or informal sector enterprises.<\/p>\n

Key finding of recent survey<\/h2>\n

1) Gross Value Added grew by 8.8%<\/span> in current prices in the year 2020-21 and by 26.6%<\/span> in the year 2021-22 over the respective previous years<\/p>\n

2) Industrial output grew by more than 35% in 2021-22<\/span> over the previous year<\/p>\n

3) Total estimated employment in the sector showed a robust growth of 7.0 % in 2021-22 over the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh were among the top five states<\/span> contributing significantly to manufacturing GVA<\/a><\/span> and employment<\/span> in both years.<\/p>\n
