Researchers have recently reported on the potential of using MXene coatings that can\u00a0 \u00a0lighten satellite payloads.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong>-1) MXenes are an emerging class of two-dimensional (2D) ceramic nanomaterials that were first discovered<\/span> in 2011.<\/p>\n

2) MXenes uniquely combine metallic conductivity, hydrophilic surfaces<\/span>, and excellent mechanical properties<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Composition<\/strong>-1) They are made from a bulk crystal called MAX<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) They have the general formula of Mn+1XnTx<\/span>, where M is an early transition metal, X is carbon and\/or nitrogen, and T is a functional group on the surface of an MXene (typically O, OH, and F).<\/p>\n

3) Among its various types , titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx)<\/span> is the most widely used.<\/p>\n

Salient properties of Mxene<\/h2>\n

1) High electrical conductivity<\/span> (6,000 \u2013 8,000 S\/cm)<\/p>\n

2) Hydrophilic<\/span> and clay-like surface terminating layers<\/p>\n

3) Very high volumetric capacitance<\/span> (>900 F cm\u22123)<\/p>\n

4) Broad optical absorption<\/span> from UV to NIR<\/p>\n

5) Excellent mechanical properties<\/span><\/p>\n

6) This unique combination is not found in other 2D materials.Example: Graphene<\/a> lacks surface functionalization<\/span>, while other ceramic 2D materials have poor electrical conductivity.<\/p>\n

Application of Mxene<\/h2>\n

1) Energy Storage<\/strong>-They are used in storing energy.For example-Batteries (Li-ion, Li-S, Al-ion), Supercapacitors and Hydrogen storage.<\/p>\n

2) Electromagnetic Shielding<\/strong>-Radar absorption and 5G communication.<\/p>\n

3) Water Purification<\/strong>-Desalination membranes,Selective separation and Selective separation.<\/p>\n

4) Composites<\/strong>-Polymer reinforcement and Ceramic matrix composites.<\/p>\n
