Scientists have found a new species of nematode, Steinernema adamsi, that can help in the battle against crop pests.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong>-Nematodes are roundworms and their size can vary from a tiny 0.2 millimetre to a few metres. They\u00a0are among the most abundant<\/span> animals on Earth.<\/p>\n

Forms<\/strong>-They occur as parasites<\/span> in animals and plants or as free-living forms<\/span> in soil, fresh water, marine environments.<\/p>\n

Features<\/strong>-Nematodes are bilaterally symmetrical<\/span>, elongate, and usually tapered at both ends<\/p>\n

Distribution of population<\/strong>-They have been reported from every continent on earth<\/span> and occur in deserts, swamps, the oceans, the tropics and Antarctica<\/span>. They can be found even in unusual places like vinegar, beer malts, and water-filled cracks deep within Earth\u2019s crust.<\/p>\n

Diseases<\/strong>-They can cause a variety of diseases (such as filariasis<\/a>, ascariasis, and trichinosis<\/span>) and parasitize many crop plants and domesticated animals<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Significance of Nematodes<\/h2>\n

1) These nematodes play a crucial role in the environment<\/span> as they are responsible for production of about 19% of ammonia<\/span> of the soil.<\/p>\n

2) They are also important bioindicators<\/span> of soil ecosystem health.<\/p>\n

3) They feed on bacteria, fungi, or other microscopic creatures<\/span>. Thus, they are a major component of soil and sediment ecosystems.<\/p>\n

About Steinernema adamsi<\/h2>\n

Introduction<\/strong>-This new species is a member of a family of nematodes called Steinernema.It were\u00a0first discovered<\/span> in the 1920s.<\/p>\n

Characteristics<\/strong>-It is an entomopathogenic nematode<\/span> that crawls inside an insect. It defecates highly pathogenic bacteria into its blood. It then combines with that bacterium to kill the insect host.<\/p>\n

Significance<\/strong>-1) Steinernema are not harmful to humans<\/span> or other mammals.
\n2) They can help in battle against crop pest because it can infect and kill insect pests<\/span>.<\/p>\n

NOTE-Entomopathogenic<\/strong>-It means “causing disease to insects.”<\/p>\n
