Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Researchers have recently created a sensor using “frozen smoke” that uses artificial intelligence to detect formaldehyde in real-time<\/span>, even at concentrations as low as eight parts per billion. It can exceed the sensitivity of many indoor air quality sensors.<\/p>\n

What is Frozen smoke?<\/h2>\n

1. It is technically known as aerogel<\/span> and is an exceptional material. It’s praised as a miracle material.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. It was first developed<\/span> in the 1930s.<\/p>\n

3. Properties<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> Aerogel has low density<\/span>, high thermal resistance<\/span>, and a very porous structure<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Aerogel has the texture of a fine, dry sponge<\/span> but feels significantly lighter. In fact, it holds the title as the world’s lightest solid.<\/span>
\nc.<\/strong> When gently pressed, aerogel regains its original shape<\/span>, but pressing harder creates a dimple. However, excessive pressure can cause aerogel to shatter into tiny pieces like glass.
\nd.<\/strong> They are mostly made of air and can eliminate contaminants.<\/p>\n

What is Formaldehyde?<\/h2>\n

1. Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas<\/span> used in various industries for manufacturing building materials and household products.<\/p>\n

2. It is a volatile organic compound (VOC)<\/a> that can be emitted by certain materials like pressed wood products, wallpapers, paints, and synthetic fabrics<\/span>.<\/p>\n
