Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently Finance minister has announced a Middle-class housing scheme for the middle class as part of ‘Housing for all’ policy.<\/p>\n

What is this Middle class housing scheme?<\/h2>\n

1. Its announcement<\/span> was made in the recent budget for FY 25<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. The government will start a program to assist middle-class individuals living in rented houses, slums, chawls, and unauthorized colonies<\/span> to purchase or construct their own homes.<\/p>\n

3. While it is part of the ‘housing for all’ policy<\/span>, it’s not an extension of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Its a new scheme\u00a0where the government will define income levels, location, and accommodation types to identify beneficiaries<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– There is no defined criteria<\/span> for the identification of the middle class in India yet.<\/p>\n

What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is a housing scheme<\/span> launched by the Government of India with the aim of providing affordable housing<\/span> for all by the year 2022.<\/p>\n

2. Components<\/strong>– It has two components<\/span>: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U)<\/a> for the urban poor and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) (PMAY-G)<\/a> for the rural poor.<\/p>\n

3. Nodal Ministry<\/strong>– Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U) administered by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs<\/span> while Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin) (PMAY-G)\u00a0administered by Ministry of Rural Development<\/span>.<\/p>\n
