Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The invasive weed Cuscuta dodder is gradually choking the Chengalpet forests and Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary. This poses a threat to the local vegetation<\/span>, ecology<\/span>, and the habitat of migratory birds<\/span>.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> It is an invasive weed native to North America<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> This rootless parasitic vine<\/span> has invaded acres of trees in the Chengalpet reserve forests and is now spreading within Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> It has been observed that dodder covering the canopy of Barringtonia trees<\/span>, which are favored nesting spots for migratory water birds.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> This holoparasitic plant forms a canopy on the host plant<\/span> and sends out numerous tendrils. <\/span>\u00a0It creates a dense mass that eventually chokes<\/span> and kills the host<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Dodder has been designated<\/span> as a ‘declared noxious weed<\/span>‘ in 25 countries<\/span>, where the importation of its seeds<\/span> and plant material is prohibited<\/span>. In the United States, it stands as the sole weed seed whose transportation is forbidden in all states.<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> Cuscuta seeds are spheroid<\/span> with a tough coat<\/span> which allows them to survive up to 50 years in dry storage<\/span> and at least 10 years in the field<\/span>.<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> Cuscuta seeds can germinate without needing a specific stimulant<\/span>, unlike root parasites.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– A technical paper from the National Research Centre for Weed Science<\/span> in India highlights<\/span> Cuscuta as a significant issue in oilseeds, pulses, and fodder crops<\/span> across Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Orissa, West Bengal, and parts of Madhya Pradesh. These concerns persist whether the crops are grown under rain-fed<\/span> or irrigated conditions<\/span>.<\/p>\n

1. Location<\/strong>– It is a 30-hectare protected area<\/span> situated in Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

2. Significant Feature<\/strong>– It is the oldest water bird sanctuary<\/span> in the country.<\/p>\n

3. Migratory species<\/strong>– The area is a habitat for migratory birds<\/span> like pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper<\/span>, and others.<\/p>\n

4. Ramsar site<\/strong>– Since 2022, it has been recognized as a protected Ramsar site<\/span>.<\/p>\n
