Recently, a rare case of bubonic plague, also known as the Black Death<\/span>, has been detected in the US. It is likely transmitted by a pet cat.<\/p>\n

What is Bubonic plague?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– Bubonic plague is a severe bacterial infection<\/span> caused by a bacteria<\/span> called Yersinia pestis<\/span>, which is typically found in small mammals and their fleas.
\nNote- <\/strong>Y. pestis bacteria can harm both humans and animals<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Name origin<\/strong>– Bubonic plague is named after the swollen lymph nodes (buboes)<\/span> it causes. It resulted in millions of deaths in Europe during the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n

3. Fatality Rate<\/strong>: It has a case-fatality ratio ranging from 30% to 60%<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Symptoms<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> Sudden fever and chills.
\nb.<\/strong> Pain in the abdomen, arms, and legs.
\nc.<\/strong> Headaches
\nd.<\/strong> Swollen lumps in the lymph nodes that may leak pus.<\/p>\n

5. Transmission<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> Y. pestis is mainly spread by fleas on rodents and other animals<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> It spreads between animals and humans through flea bites, direct contact with infected tissues, and inhaling infected respiratory droplets.<\/p>\n

6. Incubation period<\/strong>–\u00a02 to 8 days.<\/p>\n

7. Treatment<\/strong>: Bubonic plague can be cured with antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin<\/span>, moxifloxacin, Gentamicin,<\/span> and Doxycycline<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are the other types of plague?<\/h2>\n

Bubonic is one type of plague. Other types of plague include:
\na.<\/strong> Septicemic plague<\/span>, involves infection of the blood which spreads throughout the body.
\nb. <\/strong>Pneumonic plague<\/span>, when the lungs are infected.<\/p>\n
