Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14<\/span>) is being hosted by the Government of Uzbekistan, in Samarkand from 12-17 February 2024.<\/p>\n

Objective<\/strong><\/td>\nTo provide a global platform for the conservation and sustainable<\/span> use of migratory animals<\/span> and their habitats.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Governance<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Conference of Parties (COP)<\/span> is the decision-making organ of this convention<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Is it legally binding?<\/strong><\/td>\nActivities by CMS Parties may range from legally binding treaties<\/span> (called Agreements) to less formal instruments<\/span>, such as Memoranda of Understanding.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Type of appendices<\/strong><\/td>\nAppendix I<\/span> lists endangered migratory species and includes prohibitions regarding the take of these species.
\nAppendix II<\/span> lists species that have an \u2018unfavourable conservation status<\/span>\u2019\u00a0 and encourages range states to draft range-wide agreements for conservation and management of these species.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Some important points<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It is the only global<\/span> and UN-based intergovernmental organisation. established exclusively<\/span> for the conservation and management of terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory species<\/span> throughout their range.
\n2) It acknowledges the importance of conserving migratory species.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
