Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Assam government recently declared the GI-tagged ‘Kaji Nemu’ (Citrus Limon) as the official State Fruit.<\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is a variety of lemon (Citrus Limon)<\/span> that is native to Assam<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Shape<\/strong>– It possesses an elongated and oblong shape<\/span> in contrast to other lemon varieties.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Distinctive traits<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> It is much juicier than other varieties of lemons<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> It is renowned for its distinct fragrance<\/span> and antioxidant properties. It<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is traditionally associated with Assamese cuisines<\/span>.
\nc.<\/strong> It is considered a powerhouse of nutrients<\/span>, enhancing overall health.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Cultivation<\/strong>– It is cultivated across nearly all districts of the Assam and is available throughout the year<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> GI Tag<\/strong>– In 2019, Kaji Nemu was awarded a GI (Geographical Indication) tag.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– Assam boasts a significant diversity of citrus, with a total of 16 species and 52 hybrid varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a GI tag?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> About<\/strong>– According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)<\/a>, a GI tag is a symbol used on products that have a specific geographical origin<\/span> and possess qualities or a reputation that is due to that origin.<\/p>\n

2. Third-party restriction<\/strong>– A GI right prevents its use by a third party whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.<\/p>\n

3. Regulation in India<\/strong>– GI tags in India are issued as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, of 1999<\/span>.<\/p>\n
