Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) of Wild Animals <\/span>launched the first-ever State of the World\u2019s Migratory Species report<\/span>. It was launched at the opening of a major UN wildlife conservation conference (CMS COP14).<\/p>\n

The report was<\/span> prepared by conservation scientists at the UN Environment Programme.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key findings of the report?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Decline in Population <\/strong>– Almost half (44 %) of the migratory species<\/span> listed under CMS are experiencing a decline in population.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Risk of Extinction <\/strong>– Over one-fifth of CMS-listed species are at risk of extinction<\/span>, and 97% of listed fish are facing this risk<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Lack of Protection <\/strong>– 51% of Key Biodiversity areas<\/span> important for migratory animals listed under CMS lack protection<\/span>. Also, 58% of monitored sites for these species experience unsustainable human pressure.<\/p>\n

4. Identified causes:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> The most significant threats to migratory species are overexploitation<\/span> and habitat loss<\/span> caused by human activity.
\nb.<\/strong> Climate change, pollution<\/span>, and invasive species<\/span> also greatly affect migratory species.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Lack of coverage under CMS<\/strong>– Despite being listed by CMS, many migratory species remain at risk, with 399 threatened species not yet included under CMS<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are the key recommendations of the report?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Addressing illegal and unsustainable practices.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Safeguarding critical sites<\/span> for migratory species.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Focusing on species most threatened with extinction<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Intensifying actions against climate change and pollution.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Broadening CMS listings<\/span> to encompass more endangered species.<\/p>\n

About Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS)<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> About<\/strong>– CMS, also known as the Bonn Convention<\/span>, is an international treaty aimed at conserving migratory species<\/span> and their habitats worldwide.<\/p>\n

2. Purpose<\/strong>– It provides a framework for countries to collaborate in conserving migratory species and their habitats. This particularly includes species that cross national borders during their annual migrations.
