Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The United Nations recently designated seven initiatives<\/span> spanning Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia as the UN World Restoration Flagships<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is UN World Restoration Flagships?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> About <\/strong>– It is a component of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration,\u00a0led by the UN Environment Program (UNEP)<\/span><\/a> and the Food and Agriculture Organization<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note <\/strong>– The UN General Assembly declared the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030)<\/span> to scale up restoration efforts of degraded ecosystems in order to combat climate change, improving food security, water supply, and biodiversity.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Objective<\/strong>– Its goal is to stop, prevent<\/span>, and reverse the decline of ecosystems<\/span> across all continents and oceans.<\/p>\n

3. Eligibility<\/strong>– The awards recognize noteworthy initiatives that contribute to global commitments aimed at restoring one billion hectares of land<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Significance:
\na.<\/strong> The recognition granted by the UNEP and FAO of the UN makes the initiatives qualified for technical and financial assistance from the organization<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Inclusion in the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Report<\/span> to the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

What are the seven initiatives designated under UN World Restoration Flagships?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> The Restoring Mediterranean Forests Initiative<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> It includes countries Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey.
\nb.<\/strong> It employs an innovative approach to protect and restore natural habitats and vulnerable ecosystems. Around two million hectares of forests have been restored across the region since 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. The Living Indus initiative<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> It was approved by the Pakistan parliament after the 2022 climate change induced floods.
\nb.<\/strong> It was officially launched at the 27th Conference of Parties<\/span> to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/span> in Sharm el-Sheikh.
\nc.<\/strong> The initiative designates the Indus River as a living entity<\/span> with rights to protect rivers globally.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> The Acci\u00f3n Andina social movement- <\/strong>It is led by Peruvian conservation non-profit ECOAN aims to protect and restore a forest area of one million hectares<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. The Sri Lanka Mangrove Regeneration initiative<\/strong> – It is a community-led program<\/span> focused on restoring the natural balance in the ecosystem through science-driven methods<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5. The Terai Arc Landscape initiative<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> It aims to restore critical forest corridors<\/span> in the India- Nepal region<\/span> with the help of local communities acting as citizen scientists, anti-poaching units, forest guards, and more.
\nb.<\/strong> It also helped in increasing the tiger population<\/span> in the landscape shared by India and Nepal<\/span> to 1,174.<\/p>\n

6. Regreening agriculture in Africa- <\/strong>To reverse land degradation<\/span> on 1 million hectares across 8 countries in sub-Saharan Africa<\/span>.<\/p>\n

7. The Growing Forests in Africa’s Drylands initiative- <\/strong>It aims to increase from 41,000 restored hectares area to 229,000 hectares by 2030.<\/p>\n
