Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently published the guidelines on the clinical management of diphtheria.<\/p>\n

Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\nDetails<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Description<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is a serious contagious bacterial infection<\/span> of the nose and throat.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Caused by<\/strong><\/td>\nStrains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae<\/span> that make a toxin<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/strong><\/td>\nA thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils<\/span>, sore throat<\/span> and hoarseness, swollen glands<\/span> (enlarged lymph nodes) in the neck and difficulty breathing etc<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Transmission<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It can spread from person to person<\/span>, usually through respiratory droplets, like from coughing or sneezing<\/span>.
\n2) People can also get sick from touching infected open sores<\/span> or ulcers<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Current treatment<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It can be treated with medications but in advanced stages, the bacterial infection can damage the heart<\/span>, kidneys<\/span> and nervous<\/span> system.
\n2) Neutralization of unbound toxin with Diphtheria Antitoxin<\/span> (DAT).
\n3) Antibiotics<\/span> to prevent further bacterial growth.
\n4) Monitoring<\/span> and supportive care<\/span> to prevent and treat complications, e.g. airway obstruction, myocarditis.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are WHO’s latest recommendation?<\/h2>\n

1) It has recommended the use of macrolide antibiotics<\/span> (azithromycin, erythromycin) in preference to penicillin antibiotics<\/span>.
\n2) It has recommended that routine sensitivity testing should not be performed prior<\/span> to administration of diphtheria antitoxin (DAT).<\/span>
\n3) It has suggested an escalation in the dosage regimen for diphtheria antitoxin (DAT) based on disease severity. It has <\/span><\/span>also opposed giving\u00a0fixed dose<\/span> for all<\/span> patients.
\n4)\u00a0 It has suggested to administer antibiotics alongside DAT<\/span>. The antibiotics treatment should not be delayed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
