Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

Coal Ministry has recently organized an Industry Interaction at Hyderabad. This was aimed to promote coal\/gasification projects across the nation.<\/p>\n

Process<\/strong>: Coal gasification is a process in which coal is partially oxidised with air<\/span>, oxygen, steam or carbon dioxide to form a fuel gas<\/span>. This gas is then used for deriving energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

In-situ gasification of coal<\/span> \u2013 or Underground Coal Gasification<\/span> (UCG) \u2013It is the technique of converting coal into gas while it is still in the seam<\/span> and then extracting it through wells<\/span>.
\nRather than directly burning coal<\/span>, gasification transforms all of its carbon into electricity<\/span>, hydrogen<\/span>, and other kinds of energy via partial oxidation.<\/p>\n

Advantages of Coal Gasification<\/h2>\n

1) Chemical energy production<\/strong>-Coal gas may be transformed into chemical energy, which is then utilised to produce iron from iron ore<\/span>, as well as methanol and urea<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) Green energy production<\/span><\/strong>-The\u00a0hydrogen<\/span> produced by coal gasification may be utilised for a variety of applications, including the production of ammonia<\/span> and the powering of a Hydrogen Economy<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3) Cost effectiveness for Indian industries<\/strong>– The industries can utilise syngas<\/span> from coal gasification facilities instead of imported coking coal. <\/span>This will enhance the cost and export effectiveness of Indian Industries.<\/p>\n

Disadvantages of Coal Gasification<\/h2>\n

1) Environmental issue<\/strong>-The process can produce a number of harmful emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides etc.<\/p>\n

2) Cost<\/strong>– It is an expensive energy production process.<\/p>\n

3) Overuse of water<\/strong>-It is one of the more water-intensive<\/span> modes of energy generation.<\/p>\n
