Why in the news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Several member countries have recently asked the IPCC to ready the assessment reports by 2028 to coincide with the GST (Global Stocktake).<\/p>\n

What has been the history of IPCC assessment report?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since 1988, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has produced six assessment reports<\/span>, three special reports<\/span>, and methodology reports<\/span>.
\nThree reports from the IPCC\u2019s sixth assessment cycle (AR6) were published in 2021-2022<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is the objective of these reports?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

These provide guidelines for estimating greenhouse gas emissions<\/span> and removal<\/span>. These reports also examine the science and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0consequences of climate change<\/span>, and also provide adaptation and mitigation measures<\/span>.\u00a0These documents are prepared by scientists from the 195 countries that are part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).<\/p>\n

What was the observation of Sixth assessment report ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It has warned that the time to limit the rise of the world\u2019s average surface temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius<\/span> from the pre-industrial era is running out.<\/p>\n

What will the new assessment report include?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) IPCC will produce the full assessment and synthesis reports<\/span>, the methodology reports<\/span>, and a special report.
\n2) The full assessment reports will include reports from three Working Groups<\/span> plus a synthesis report<\/span>.
\n3) The two methodology reports will be on short-lived climate forcers<\/span> (like methane) and on carbon removal.
\n4) The IPCC bureau will revise the technical guidelines<\/span> on impacts<\/span> and adaptation<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is global stocktake?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

UNFCCC countries conduct a \u2018global stocktake\u2019 (GST) to assess the world\u2019s progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement, every five years<\/span>.
\nThe GST is a mechanism to measure collective progress<\/span>, identify gaps<\/span>, and chart a better course of climate action.<\/p>\n
