Scientists have recently detected water molecules on the surface of two asteroids using the data from SOFIA airborne observatory.<\/p>\n

Objective<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was used to make observations of complex molecules<\/span>, new solar<\/span> systems<\/span>, and planets<\/span> in the solar system<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Key features<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It was a telescope mounted on a Boeing 747 SP aircraft. It used infrared light<\/span> to observe the universe.
\n2) It could fly into the stratosphere<\/span> at 38,000-45,000 feet, putting it above 99 percent of Earth\u2019s infrared-blocking atmosphere. This<\/span> <\/span>allowed the astronomers to study the solar system and beyond<\/span>.
\n3) It\u00a0could observe the universe in the widest range<\/span> of infrared light.
\n4) The airplane is capable of ten-hour flights<\/span>, with flight paths chosen to keep ahead of the sunrise and maximize the amount of darkness<\/span>.
\n5) Its ease of mobility<\/span> allowed researchers to make observations from almost anywhere<\/span> in the world. This enabled studies of transient events<\/span> that often take place over oceans, where there are no telescopes<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
End of mission<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was cancelled<\/span> in 2022 due to its high cost<\/span> and inadequate scientific<\/span> output.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What is an asteroid?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Description<\/strong>-They are small<\/span>, rocky objects<\/span> that orbit the sun. They\u00a0are leftovers<\/span> from the formation of our solar system
\nSize<\/strong>-They are much smaller<\/span> than planets. . From being as small as 10 meters across to as huge as 530 km in diameter, asteroids have varied sizes.<\/p>\n
