Introduction<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1967 and was declared a tiger reserve in 1974<\/span>. The\u00a0name ‘Melghat’ means the confluence<\/span> of various ‘ghats’ or valleys.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Location<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is located on the southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range in Central India, called<\/span> Gavilgarh Hill<\/span> in Maharashtra.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Vegetation<\/strong><\/td>\nThe forest is tropical dry deciduous<\/span> in nature, dominated by teak.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Rivers<\/strong><\/td>\nThe reserve is a catchment area for five major rivers: the Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga, and Dolar. These are tributaries of the river Tapti<\/span>.
\nThe Tapti River<\/span> and the Gawilgadh ridge<\/span> of the Satpura Range form the boundaries of the reserve.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Major tribes<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Korkus<\/span> are the largest tribal community in Melghat. Other communities include the Gawli<\/span> community, the Gond<\/span> tribe etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fauna<\/strong><\/td>\nThe prominent animals are Sloth Bear<\/span>, Indian Gaur<\/span>, Sambar deer<\/span>, Leopard, Nilgais, dhole, hyena, jungle cat, langur, etc.
\nIt is considered a stronghold of the critically endangered forest owlet.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Some important facts<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It was among the first nine tiger<\/span> reserves notified in 1973-74 under Project Tiger<\/span>.
\n2) It was the first tiger reserve<\/span> in Maharashtra.
\n3) Kula Mama<\/span> (maternal uncle) is the name affectionately used by Korku tribal<\/span> people for tigers<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
